Dear friends,
I’ve got a little story for you. In early 2005, when Joe McMahan and I were making what would become the “Burning” record, our friend and genius songwriter David Egan happened to be in Nashville for a few days; we were fortunate to have him play on a couple of songs. Later we sent him a CD of the finished tracks. A few months later I got a message from Dave, that the great Irma Thomas was going to record a version of a song from the record, “Flowers”, that I’d written with Gwil Owen. Turns out that David, in an act of true generosity, had included my version of “Flowers” on the CD of his own songs that he had pitched to Irma’s producer, Scott Billington. Her version appeared on her After the Rain album, which won the Grammy in 2007 for best blues album. I am forever grateful to brother Dave for getting the song to Irma; she would never have heard it otherwise.
This week, I am pleased to be a part of a very special mini-tour honoring my late friend and mentor: The “Sing It!
