Fresh strawberries out in the garden
Dear friends,
May this find you well, “this” being yet another occasional communique from the KG home office. I’m packing my bags while watching the skies darken as a wide swath of rain is coming in from the west. Pearl the watch dog is snoring on the sofa here next to me. Here’s what’s coming up, and goin’ down, over the next couple of weeks:
Tomorrow, May 10, I’ll be in Memphis shooting a performance for the Ditty TV video series. I’ll provide all the details on when it will air as soon as I find out. On Saturday night, the 11th, also in Memphis, I’ll be playing The Railgarten at 9pm, in quartet formation, with Joe McMahan, Ron Eoff, and Joshua Hunt. I am, as ever, proud as all hell (a phrase which makes no sense, but you know what I mean . . .) to be playing with these gentlemen, rendering songs I’ve written, sending them out to the live-music-loving public, who will surely ALL be there to witness the git-down there at The Railgarten. The great Cory Branan will follow. We don’t play Memphis very often, though it is a musical and cultural cornerstone for me, so please come down if you happen to be in the area.
On Wednesday, May 29, I’ll be returning to the illustrious Bluebird Cafe here in Nashville, playing a writers’ round with my pal Will Kimbrough, Brigitte DeMeyer, and the rather amazing (and amazingly young) Jack Barksdale. It’s a 9pm show, and, as you may know, most if not all shows at this venue sell out, so if you’re interested, you might check ticket availability sooner rather than later. Thrilled to be a part of this show with these very talented folks.
Friday, May 31 finds me at Eddie Owen’s fantastic venue, the Red Clay Music Foundry, in Duluth, GA. I’ll be sharing the bill with fellow Eastside troubadour and dear friend Amelia White. Details here:

This will be quite the intimate show, which tends to bring out good things in the music. Very much looking forward to this!
Speaking of June, well, let’s just say I’ll be moving around a whole lot, putting on the miles, opening for Todd Snider on some dates, and playing some festivals with my band, including the mighty Twangfest in St. Louis, headlining the Watertown (TN)Americana Day on June 8, (not to be confused with the Watertown Americana Festival later in the month), and playing for the first time the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Thanks to all of you who tuned in for my latest Concert Window show on April 25. I had a great time and look forward to playing another one soon. I will indeed be getting those “tip rewards” out to you–you’ll get an email from me soon, asking which CD you want, etc. I should be able to get these out to you before the June tour kicks in. Unfortunately, according to CW support, the video file itself was/is corrupted, so I won’t be able to provide a one-song highlight from the show on the Concert Window site, much less download the whole thing. All I can say is: we’ll keep on trying.
As those of you on Facebook know, I’ve been on a bit of a Jesse Winchester jag lately–what a gentleman genius he was. And I always envy those fellas that sing tenor . . . myself being in a lower (baritone) register, which is cool if you’re Barry White, or Tony Joe White, but seems harder to project, to get those words up and out into the air. Sometimes I gravitate towards music that is quite different from my own, or from what I usually listen to. And when I do “get out there”, it’s always a good thing. Otherwise, to keep me busy, I’ve got a pile of books in my bag, including poems by the late great Cesare Pavese. Also a fantastic novel by Lorrie Moore, titled A Gate at the Stairs.
