Gee’s Bend quilt at The Met
I’ve been in the northeast, doing interviews/recording live performances for various media outlets in advance of the record’s release. Tilt and Shine officially drops on July 27; if you find yourself in Nashville, we’re playing a special record release show that night in the main room at City Winery. Had a great little run to Louisiana recently; played a few shows around the old homeground up north, including a wild night as a bandmember at my friend Monty Russell‘s son’s wedding reception, sharing the stage with Monty and my old friend and mentor Kenny Bill Stinson. We also got to hear a great set from the bride and groom, Bethany and Josh. And the bride’s dad, Phil Raybourn, sat in on piano and vocals for a while and nailed it! A little too early the next morning I drove down to Lafayette to the SOLO Songwriters Festival, and played a couple of songs at a brunch honoring my late friend David Egan; it was a fundraiser for the Dreamer Fund, which was established in his memory. Made it to the hotel for an hour-long nap afterwards, then it was back to the festival to play my own solo set. It was great to see friends/fans who came all the way from New Orleans and Shreveport to hear me that evening. I was proud to be a part of this festival and truly enjoyed hearing several other singer/song-scribblers that day. Hats off to all the sponsors, production crew, and staff for a job well-done, and to all the folks who came out to hear the music.

I’ve been carrying a few different things in the book bag lately: a signed, numbered edition of Gary Snyder‘s book of poems, “Wave,” published by Windhover Press in Iowa City in 1969 (which likely came from my late father-in-law’s library); I’m also taking another run at Lewis Hyde’s “Common As Air,” and from my wife’s bedside table I just borrowed Tom Perrotta’s 2017 novel, “Mrs. Fletcher.” And though it’s likely not very good for my eyes, when the lights are out and I can’t sleep I often fall back on “The Collected Stories of Eudora Welty,” or Kate Chopin‘s “The Awakening and Selected Short Stories”, which live on my phone. Most recently I’ve been listening to my friend Jeffrey Foucault‘s forthcoming new release, “Blood Brothers,” a fantastic record which happens to feature the one-and-only Bo Ramsey.
